So you have a large collection of some kind, and you’re ready to get rid of it. But first, you have some questions: will other people want to buy the items you’ve amassed? Is now a good time to sell?

You may have spent countless hours searching for the items in your collection, but they may not hold the same value to other people. Sometimes items that were popular in the past are not of interest to the next generation. On the other hand, sometimes items that weren’t worth much in the past are worth quite a bit to new collectors.

At Fruitcocktail Collectables, we are expert appraisers who keep a pulse on the market. We can help you find out if your collection is worth selling in 2023.

What Makes a Collection?

A collection is any group of three or more things with a common theme. If you have a few old coins, cubist paintings, or rare comic books, you have a small collection. Some collections are worth a lot of money because they contain rare items, but others mostly have sentimental value.

From a financial perspective, the best collections are large and made up of highly sought-after items that have gained value over time. Rare items usually fetch higher prices on the market, making the collection as a whole more valuable to potential buyers. The condition of the items can also impact their value, with well-preserved items often selling for higher prices.

Another consideration is the current market demand for the items in the collection. If there is a strong demand for a particular type of item or collectible, you may want to sell your collection now to capitalize on that demand. On the other hand, if the public has lost interest in the items you collect, it will be difficult to sell the collection at a good price.

Many art collections are selling for quite a bit of money right now. Last year was a record-breaking year in the art market, with many auction houses announcing company-high sales despite inflation.

Surrealist art and art that intersects with social issues are both popular right now. Many art buyers prefer to buy locally or online, and works by Northwest School artists are especially popular in the Seattle area. Some collectors aim to buy work from artists who were under-appreciated during their careers.

How to sell your art collection

You can often sell art for a good price through an online auction or gallery. You may also want to consider a well-advertised estate sale if you have other valuable items to sell. Regardless of how you sell your art, you will need to choose a good vendor that can help you advertise to niche buyers.

People have been collecting coins for many decades now. Some coins are always in demand and likely will be for some time, especially rare older mints.

Some of the most valuable U.S. coins are:

  • The 1787 Brasher Doubloon, which was one of the first gold coins circulated in the early U.S.
  • The 1794 Flowing Hair Silver Dollar, which was likely the first silver dollar printed by the U.S. Mint.
  • The 1913 Liberty Head Nickel, of which only 5 were ever printed.
  • The 1943 Lincoln Copper Cent, of which only 20-40 still exist.

How to sell your coin collection

If you believe your coin collection may be valuable, you should talk to an appraiser with expertise in coins. You can then sell your collection through an auction or consignment. Some major auction houses only sell coin collections worth $10,000 or more, but you may be able to sell a lower value collection through an online auction.

Vinyl records have resurged in popularity over the past few years. Your old record collection may have a much larger buyer base than you expected. However, not every old record is worth much on the market.

The most valuable records are rare recordings in great condition from well-known artists. If you have a record of a famous artist or band from before they made it big, it might be worth quite a lot. Some records are also more valuable if they have an original album cover that was later changed.

How to sell your record collection

The best way to sell a record collection is through an auction or consignment. You can also sell your records to a record shop, but you may not get as good of a price since the shop needs to resell at a significant profit. We recommend doing your research or talking to an appraiser before you sell.

Jade collections can be worth quite a bit of money, depending on the quality of the jade. There are collectors for just about every form of jade, from Neolithic tools to intricately carved vessels to tiny decorative items and jewelry.

The most highly valued jade is rich green jadeite, also known as imperial jade. This kind of jade has an intense emerald color and is highly translucent. At one time, the royal court of China had a standing order for all available rich green jadeite.

How to sell your jade collection

Jade customers are usually very discerning, and you may want to get your jade appraised so you can sell it for what it’s worth. From there, you can sell your jade through an online auction. Many international buyers are especially interested in high quality jadeite.

Fine jewelry with gold or diamonds, costume jewelry by well-renowned designers, Native American jewelry, Mexican jewelry, and Chinese jewelry are all very popular right now. The better the condition of your jewelry pieces, the more likely they are to sell.

If your jewelry is neither in style nor in excellent condition, you may want to hold off on selling. You may be able to get a better deal later on if the style becomes popular again.

How to sell your jewelry collection

If you have estate jewelry or a larger collection of valuable jewelry, we recommend selling it under consignment, through an auction, or in a well-advertised estate sale. You may need to get the jewelry appraised before selling it if it is especially valuable.

Comic collections are a mixed bunch. While some old and rare comics are very valuable, most comic books from the 1980s or later aren’t worth as much.

If you have comics from the 1930s, ‘40s, ‘50s, or ‘60s that are in good condition, they may be worth quite a bit of money. The most valuable comics typically feature well-known superheroes like Superman, Wonder Woman, or Batman. For example, a near-mint condition copy of Action Comics #1, which introduced Superman, sold for $3.2 million in 2014.

How to sell your comic collection

You may be able to sell your comic collection at a fair price through an online auction, consignment, or a well-advertised estate sale. The key with rare older comics is to reach the most interested buyers, who may or may not live in your area.
